About HWKeeper

HWKeeper is a free service that keeps an inventory of a company’s computers and reports the moment their hardware, software or connected devices change. It was launched in 2026 as an independent project and is developed in the open on hwkeeper.com.

1. Why it exists

Ordinary inventory tools show what is inside a computer today. They do not remember what was there yesterday. So a pulled drive, a graphics card swapped for a cheaper one, a memory module that “shrank” from 16 GB to 8 GB, or a remote-access program installed by a stranger is usually discovered months later, during the annual stocktake, if at all. HWKeeper remembers the serial number of every part and compares snapshots, so these changes are reported within 15 minutes, with what was there, what is there now and when it changed.

2. What it does

  • Records every computer’s hardware with the serial numbers of the motherboard, memory modules, drives, graphics card and monitors, plus installed programs and connected USB devices.
  • Compares a new snapshot with the previous one every 15 minutes and shows what changed.
  • Reports rogue remote-access tools, crypto miners and other programs you have not allowed.
  • Checks USB drives against your allowlist and blocks unknown ones on Windows and Linux until you approve them.
  • Notices BIOS changes, unplugged monitors and laptops that have gone silent.
  • Sends alerts by email, Telegram or webhook, keeps tickets and builds reports.

Agents are available for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus an Android app. The dashboard and this website are available in ten languages.

3. What we promise

  • Real data only. The dashboard never shows invented numbers: if there is no data, it says so. The screenshots on this website are taken on a demo company with demo data and are labelled as such.
  • No advertising, no data sale. Your inventory is yours. We do not use it for advertising and do not share it with advertisers.
  • Free for up to 50 computers per account, without a credit card. Larger fleets and managed service providers can contact us through the website.
  • Plain language. Alerts and reports are written for the person who has to act on them, not only for IT specialists.
  • Nothing the agent should not see. It does not collect screenshots, keystrokes, file contents, documents, emails, browser history or passwords.

4. How it is built and run

  • The service runs on a server in the European Union. Each organization’s data is isolated inside the database.
  • Agents connect to the server over HTTPS only, each with its own key tied to one computer, and open no ports for incoming connections.
  • Outgoing email is sent from our own mail server; website analytics runs only on the public website and only with consent where the law requires it.
  • Texts on this website and their translations into ten languages are drafted with the help of AI language tools; a person checks the facts and the wording before publication. The pictures are real screenshots of the dashboard with demo data — we do not use AI-generated images.
  • Details are on the Security, Privacy Policy and GDPR pages.

5. Where HWKeeper is going

We publish new agent versions with release notes in the dashboard and write about computer inventory in the blog. Planned next: a monthly report of everything that happened to the fleet, and a plan for managed service providers who look after several companies. We announce features when they exist, not before.
